Toneking MrZ Tomahawk

Posted on 26 September 202027 September 2020

These are the best (read: my preferred) earbuds as of yet soundwise. Their sole real annoyance is their size, which makes them by and large impossible to wear for some, and difficult for others (me included). I’m keeping them as they sound so well that I do use them – for short sessions – every now and then in spite of that.

At-a-glance Card

PROsCONs
Heavenly female vocals. Rolled off at both ends.
Mids. Fit issues for some.
Soundstage.Separation could be even better.
Not the cheapest earbuds,

Test setup

Hiby R5 / Apogee Groove (+ Fiio A5) – Lossless 16/44.1 – 24/96 – 24/192 FLAC tracks.

Signature analysis

TonalityVery obviously mid-centric, backed by well calibrated yet un-extended basses and highs.
Sub-BassSharply rolled off. Acoustic contrabbasso, to name one, is quite anemic in its lower segment.
Mid BassNot elevated yet very present when callef for, it’s fast, dry, controlled, and quite punchy.
MidsClearly the star of the show. Forward, featuring snappy transients, and great detailing. Masterful.
Male VocalsForward and quite nice, but could use more body.
Female VocalsBodied, even flutey, just spectacular.
HighsVery nicely rendered highmids and midtrebles, while sensibly rolled off thereafter. The parts that are indeed there are fast, at times even sparkly, never zingy, actually sometimes even a tad “too polite”

Technicalities

SoundstageAiry and extended in all directions, it’s a wonder.
ImagingVoices are distributed very well on the stage, well distanced and separated
DetailsQuite significant in quantity but a feeling is left that “they could be even more” if treble had been made a tad less “polite”
Instrument separationWell done, although could be even sharper.
DriveabilityNot difficult at 113dB @32 Ohm, yet some sort of amping is recommended to let them shine.

Physicals

Fit & ComfortNot easy at all due to wider than usual housing diamater. Best anyhow worn oblique, but may be a no-go for some (check before you buy!)
CableFixed, apparently reliable by annoyingly tacky and springy.
